WAS PAS swayed by so-called “false narratives” when it collaborated with DAP, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng asked the Islamist party.

Lim was responding to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang’s recent claim that non-Muslims in the country have been swayed by DAP.

Lim in a statement asked if the Islamist party fell for the “false narratives” not once, but twice, when it decided to cooperate with DAP in Pakatan Rakyat, which later became Pakatan Harapan.

“PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang made the most bizarre comment when he urged non-Malays in the country not to be fooled by DAP’s ‘false narratives’.

“Instead of continuing to play on racial politics, I would like to call on Hadi to answer me if PAS was also swayed by the so-called ‘false narratives’ … not once, but twice, when it collaborated with DAP,” said Lim.

PAS cooperated with DAP and PKR in the 1999 general election under the Barisan Alternatif banner.

They became partners in Pakatan Rakyat for the 2008 general election, which ended Barisan Nasional’s two-thirds’ majority in parliament.

PAS then ditched the bloc in 2015, and several of its party leaders formed Amanah.

“Let me remind Hadi that PAS was part of Barisan Nasional in 1972 as a junior to Umno. This partnership helped boost PAS’ to win 14 parliamentary seats in the 1974 general election.

“History tells us PAS ditched Umno and Barisan Nasional in 1977. The following (1978 general election), PAS was reduced to only five parliamentary seats. It even lost its grip on Kelantan for the next 12 years until 1990.

“It was abandoned by its Malay electorate until the 1999 general election at the height of Anwar’s Reformasi movement,” said Lim.

Hadi told PAS mouthpiece Harakahdaily that DAP was trying to replace MCA and MIC as representatives of the local Chinese and Indian population, adding that DAP aimed to disrupt the harmonious plural society formed without the imposition of Islam, despite it being the religion of the federation.

Lim then urged Hadi to admit whether PAS is riding on other parties to fulfil its own political agenda. – June 11, 2023.
