THE Father’s Organic Farm campsite in Batang Kali, Selangor continues to remain closed after the landslide tragedy that killed 31 campers in December last year.

There was no visible sign of activity at the farm from the top of the road where the landslide – covering an area of 300m from an altitude of 70m – occurred.

A check by The Malaysian Insight found that the gate at the farm’s entrance was also padlocked with chains.

At the site, sub-contractors commissioned by the Public Works Department (PWD) were seen monitoring soil movements.

When asked, they said the checks were being carried out weekly for readings to be sent to their office to be analysed.

The early morning catastrophe on December 16 killed 31 out of 92 people who were at the campsite. The rest escaped unhurt or had minor injuries.

The road to the campsite had also become a single lane stretching about 100m, cordoned off by plastic road barriers.

To ensure the safety of motorists, the same road is being monitored by Rela (People’s Volunteer Corps) members who set up a checkpoint 4km from the area.

The Malaysian Insight has contacted state executive councillor for local government Ng Sze Han for more details.

On Monday, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the Batang Kali landslide report is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

He said the report would then be presented to the cabinet before being finalised for further action.

Nanta said his ministry, through PWD in collaboration with government agencies, was preparing the final draft report.

“I understand many parties, including families of the victims, want to know or get the final report on the incident. The PWD is doing its best to complete this process,” he said.

The families of the Batang Kali landslide victims demanded that the government issue a full investigation report on the tragedy. – June 9, 2023.
