PEOPLE will lose trust in Umno if the party fails to make the current unity government a success, party deputy president Mohamad Hasan said today.

If such a situation were to happen, he said people will become “fed up” with the country’s political situation.

“Who else will believe in Umno if we fail to make this government a success?

“We not only will disappoint the trust of our beloved King but will also make people feel fed up with our political situation.

“In fact, voters will continue to punish Umno by rejecting the party which will not allow the party to rise again,” the Rembau MP said during his keynote speech at the joint opening of the party’s Wanita, Youth and Puteri assemblies at the Putra World Trade Centre this evening.

Mohamad said Umno’s performance in the unity government will determine their fate in the next general election.

“It has been four years that Malaysia has been in (political) turmoil without a clear goal in becoming a successful nation.

“Therefore, we must use this unique opportunity to differentiate Umno from other political parties.

“Hence, tonight I want to make it clear that defending and making this unity government a success is Umno’s goal at this time,” Mohamad, who is also BN’s deputy chairman, said.

Mohamad, who holds the defence minister portfolio in the administration led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, is confident in succeeding with its aim, given the expertise and experience the party has.

Umno won just 26 seats – 19 in peninsular and seven in Sabah – from the 120 it contested in the general election.

Combined with other component parties, BN won a mere 30 seats in total, making it their worst ever election performance.

Umno, the lynchpin party of BN, managed to become part of the unity government, by agreeing to cooperate with long-time nemesis Pakatan Harapan, ending the week-long political impasse. – June 7, 2023.
