SARAWAK has proposed the construction of the Trans-Borneo railway, a train service across the island of Borneo.
Premier Abang Johari Openg said the Sarawak government has submitted the proposal for the construction of the railway to the Transport Ministry in a meeting in Lawas today.
“This is a federal government project, and a study will be conducted by the Transport Ministry,” he said.
“This train service is expected to pass through Sabah and connect with Kalimantan, Indonesia. Hence, there should also be discussions between Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei because this project may involve these three countries.”
Abang Johari said this in a press conference after attending a briefing on a project under the Regional Corridor Development Authority.
He said if the project is successfully implemented, it will open up economic opportunities for the areas that the train passes through.
“I think the time has come for us to establish this train service, which will definitely be able to stimulate economic activities,” he added. – Bernama, May 27, 2023.
