Selangor MMEA detains 3 vessels for illegal sand dredging

THE Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained three dredgers for operating without permission about 5.6 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Carey, Kuala Langat, yesterday.

Its director Maritime Captain V. Siva Kumar said MMEA patrolling teams detected three suspicious vessels that were carrying out sand dredging and sand transfer activities.

“Investigations revealed the dredgers were operated by a captain and four crew members believed to be Chinese nationals, aged between 30 and 61, who did not have any identification documents.

“The three dredgers did not have permission to carry out sand dredging activities,” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under the Continental Shelf Act 1966, the Merchant Shipping Ordinance 1952 and the Customs Act 1967. – Bernama, May 25, 2023.
