DAP’S Er Teck Hwa today apologised to those he might have hurt or offended during his tenure as Bakri MP, in announcing that he does not wish to contest in the 14th general election.

He said the decision is his own, and not due to pressure from the party leadership.

“There were many rumours, saying I was asked to resign. So, I am here to clear things up.

“ I am going to go, to let a new face contest in Bakri. This is my personal choice,” said the two-term lawmaker.

“I would also like to apologise to everyone (I might have hurt) during my years of service.”

Er said he has no plan to contest in another seat, but would do so if the DAP leadership decides he should.

He said for now, he will focus on working behind the scenes and helping Pakatan Harapan in its fight to retain Bakri.

Er defeated MCA’s candidate in both the 2008 and 2013 general elections.

In GE13, he beat Lee Chin Yong with a 5,067-vote majority. In 2008, he won by only 577 votes.

It was reported yesterday that DAP sources said Damansara Utama assemblyman Yeo Bee Yin will contest in Bakri in GE14.

Yeo has yet to confirm or deny the information. – March 22, 2018.
