MECHANICAL spring scales will be replaced with electronic ones within a year, said Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Salahuddin Ayub.
He said the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry would hold engagement sessions with industry players and enforcement agencies regarding the government’s decision.
“Only 25% of (traders are using) electronic weighing scales nationwide. My ministry plans to hold a series of discussions with various parties to resolve weights- and measures-related issues,” he said.
He said this to reporters after officiating the World Metrology Day celebration, organised by De Metrology Sdn Bhd, at a mall in Putrajaya today.
At the event, De Metrology received recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records for the highest number of measuring instruments verifications in a single day, when it registered 3,197 instruments on May 16.
Salahuddin said prior to fully implementing the use of electronic scales, the government will consider issues around the supply and price of the devices to give traders ample time to fall in line.
He said the ministry will appoint several companies to supply the electronic scales. – Bernama, May 21, 2023.
