BERSATU leader Azmin Ali is set to contest in Morib instead of Bukit Antarabangsa in the Selangor state elections, reports Free Malaysia Today.

The news portal, quoting a Bersatu source, said Azmin was ready to find a safer seat to contest.

“There are plans to let Azmin contest in Morib but the final decision will be made by the party leadership,” the source was quoted as saying.

The source also said there were several other safe seats for Azmin to consider but it looked likely that he would choose Morib.

Morib is a seat under the Kuala Langat parliamentary constituency.

In the last general election, PAS candidate Ahmad Yunus Hairi won the Kuala Langat seat with a majority of more than 7,000 votes.

Ahmad Yunus is also the Sijangkang state representative and is expected to contest again in the state polls.

Azmin failed to retain his Gombak parliamentary seat in the last general election (GE15), losing to Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari from Pakatan Harapan by about 13,000 votes.

His defeat is largely seen as a rejection for defecting from PKR to Bersatu and for being part of the Sheraton Move that saw the fall of the Pakatan Harapan (PH) government in 2020.

Azmin has been Bukit Antarabangsa assemblyman for 15 years now.

The Bukit Antarabangsa state seat falls within the Ampang parliamentary constituency, another federal seat that was won big by PH in GE15.

Azmin, a former PKR deputy president, was the Selangor MB from 2014 to 2018. – May 21, 2023.
