Sarawak to decide on hydrogen projects by 2025

THE final investment decision on Sarawak’s two green hydrogen projects in Bintulu is expected to be made next year and in 2025 respectively, Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni told the state assembly today.

He said the decision on Project H2biscus would be in the fourth quarter of next year and Project H2ornbill, the second quarter in 2025.

Project H2biscus is undertaken through a state government agency, SEDC Energy, in collaboration with South Korean companies Samsung Engineering, Posco and Lotte Chemical while Project H2ornbill is also via SEDC Energy in collaboration with the Japanese firms Sumitomo Corporation and Eneos, a petroleum company.

Hazland also told the assembly that to date, both projects have completed their respective feasibility studies and are expected to continue to the front end engineering design stage “within the next few months.

He said based on the project planning, the plants for both the projects should be in operation in 2027.

Apart from the Bintulu projects, Hazland said, SEDC Energy is also setting up a hydrogen production plant and refuelling station in Rembus, Samarahan to support the multibillion-ringgit Kuching urban transport system project.

The plant is expected to be completed in 2025.
