THE Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) has advised residents in the state to store water.
The notice was made after Sungai Muda in Kedah, which supplies water to 80% of Penang, experienced an “extreme drop” in water levels.
In a statement, PBAPP said water levels were recorded below 1 metre at about 5am this morning at the Lahar Tiang intake.
“The actual cause of the drop has not been determined but it is suspected a “mishap” occurred upstream.”
“As a result, water supply in Penang would be affected.”
“In response, PBAPP is drawing down water from the Mengkuang Dam for use at the Sungai Dua water treatment plant,” it said in a statement.
PBAPP added that it was liaising with the Irrigation and Drainage Department to resolve the issue.
Just two days ago, PBAPP issued a water alert after two key dams on Penang island have dropped to about 50% levels.
PBAPP chief executive officer K. Pathmanathan said previously the effective capacities of the Air Itam Dam and Teluk Bahang Dam were 51.8% and 51.3% respectively.
The effective capacities of both dams were 82.5% and 64% at the start of this year.
