10,000 Selangor voters in bid to stop tabling of re-delineation report in Parliament

A TOTAL of 107 individuals, representing more than 10,000 Selangor voters, have filed an application to stop the tabling of the Election Commission’s re-delineation exercise report in Parliament.

Bersih 2.0 today announced the filing, which was done at the Shah Alam High Court yesterday, reported Malaysiakini.

“We are filing the case to apply for a stay order over any tabling, discussion, debate or voting in Parliament over the final report of the re-delineation exercise,” Bersih acting chairman Shahrul Aman Mohd Saari was quoted as saying at a press conference.

Shahrul said the 107 applicants each represent more than 100 voters, and are from 17 state and 11 parliamentary seats.

They object to the EC’s second notice on the redrawing of electoral boundaries, including the fact that the commission had failed to hear each and every objection.

Among the applicants are former Bersih chairman Maria Chin Abdullah, Selangor State Speaker Hannah Yeoh, Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua and several state assemblymen.

The suit also named Prime Minister Najib Razak and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia.

“The EC did not inform us regarding the status of our representation or its local inquiry sessions, even though we have sent two official letters to the EC, on February 28 and March 12,” Shahrul said, adding that the application was filed following the EC’s failure to conduct a local inquiry for those who had submitted objections.

On March 9, the EC submitted its final report on the re-delineation of electoral boundaries for parliamentary and state seats to Najib.

EC chairman Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the re-delineation exercise, as provided for under Article 113 (10) of the federal constitution, has been completed.

The current parliamentary sitting, which ends on April 5, is expected to approve the new boundaries. – March 21, 2018.
