DR Mahathir Mohamad has left Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA), a Malay-based coalition he formed just before the 2022 general election to unite the Malays.

He said he would continue to fight for the rights of the majority community in the Malay Proclamation movement.

Astro Awani quoted the former prime minister as saying that he had left GTA after realising the pact had failed to appeal to its target group.

He was the chairman of Pejuang when he formed GTA. He quit the party in February but had said he would continue to chair the coalition.

“I hold no posts now (in GTA). The aim of forming GTA did not materialise. GTA could not help us win (the general election),” Dr Mahathir said in Jitra last night.

“We found that if GTA functions as a party, we can’t win. We contested in (2022) and GTA and Pejuang lost in 125 seats.

“We also also could not register GTA (as a coalition), and we have not registered GTA as a political party as it is not functioning. I am no longer with them.”

Dr Mahathir said he remained active in the Malay Proclamation movement but would not be in any political party

He said the movement aimed to inform the Malays that they have lost power over their country. – May 12, 2023.
