BERSATU leaders who want to be part of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s Malay Proclamation can sign the document in their individual capacities, party information chief Senator Razali Idris said.

Speaking to reporters, Razali said the signing of the proclamation by Bersatu leaders does not indicate Bersatu’s affiliation with Gerakan Tanah Air (GTA) in the state elections.

“We did not discuss any electoral pact or seat negotiations with GTA,” he told reporters after hosting the Bersatu Raya open house at Wangsa 118 today.

Razali admitted he and two other Bersatu leaders, namely party’s deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu and supreme council member Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid, had signed the documents.

He said Bersatu was in full support of any effort to unite the Malays, adding that the Malay Proclamation was an apolitical effort.

“This is because we know that even the Malays seemed to be divided in terms of many civil society groups. There are also many political parties,” he added.

On March 19, Dr Mahathir launched a 12-point declaration that listed the ways the community was allegedly being affected economically, socially and politically in the country.

He had then called on all who supported the Malay struggle to sign the proclamation.

PAS became the first political party to sign the proclamation with president Abdul Hadi Awang meeting Dr Mahathir for the first time after the November 19 polls.

Hadi said although he had his differences with the nonagenarian, efforts to empower the Malays must be supported. – May 8, 2023.
