THE number of Covid-19 cases reported from April 23 to 29 increased by 3% from 4,817 cases in the previous week to 4,963 cases.

Health Director-General Dr Muhammad Radzi Abu Hassan in a statement today said based on data from the Health Ministry’s Crisis Preparedness and Response Centre, the number of Covid-19 admissions to public health facilities increased from 4.8% per 100,000 people in the previous week to 5.8% from April 23 to 29.

“Categories 1 and 2 patients increased from 1.4% to 1.8%, while Categories 3, 4 and 5 patients increased from 1.3% to 2%,” he said, adding that non-critical and intensive care bed occupancy in Covid-19 facilities increased by 3% while the number of patients requiring ventilators increased by 0.2%.

He said most patients admitted to the hospital were from high-risk groups such as those with comorbidities and the elderly, but this has not burdened health services and hospitals are operating as usual.

He said the Covid-19 situation in Malaysia is under control.

The ministry expects a slight increase in Covid-19 cases following Raya and Wesak Day celebrations and advised those who are symptomatic to don face masks when visiting relatives and friends.

Students, teachers and school staff are urged to adhere to the prescribed standard operating procedure to curb the spread of Covid-19. – Bernama, May 5, 2023.
