A NEW bridge will be built to replace the Enggor Bridge, which collapsed yesterday, said Perak Infrastructure, Energy, Water and Public Transport Committee chairman Mohammad Nizar Jamaluddin.

He said it would take between 15 months or two years for the bridge to be fully completed and the cost would be worked out in detail soon.

“JKR (Public Works Department) will build the bridge based on the latest methods and design, and one that will be a lot safer.

“The construction of the bridge will also take into account the Sungai Enggor slope, which needs to be reinforced to prevent any erosion in the future,” he told reporters after surveying the site of the incident with state JKR director Ir Hamdan Ali, in Sungai Siput, today.

Nizar said JKR had planned to widen the bridge but it collapsed before work could begin.

He also said there was no need to build a Bailey Bridge as villagers there had alternative routes in Kampung Loh, near Sungai Siput, to go to Pekan Karai and surrounding areas.

About 5,000 residents around the Kampung Enggor area, in Sungai Siput, found their daily activities affected by yesterday’s collapse of the Enggor Bridge, which connects them with nearby areas.

The 13-metre-long bridge collapsed at about 11.40pm due to the strong current of Sungai Enggor following heavy rain for the past week. – Bernama, May 3, 2023.
