Putrajaya sticks with Digital Nasional for 5G rollout

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil says roll out of 5G network infrastructure in Malaysia until 80% coverage to be achieved by the end of 2023 with Digital Nasional Bhd. – The Malaysian Insight file pic, May 3, 2023.

DIGITAL Nasional Bhd (DNB) will continue to roll out the 5G network infrastructure in Malaysia until 80% coverage is achieved by the end of 2023, says Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications and Digital Minister said it will then be followed by a shift to dual wholesale network (DWN) according to conditions in line with global standards.

The shift will offer multiple networks for the people as well as industries who are target groups for the use of 5G, he said at a press conference in Putrajaya today.

He said the decision on the matter came following a recent cabinet meeting.

Fahmi said they are confident of reaching 80% by year end.

“Currently the rollout of 5G has reached 57.8% which is an increase from the previous figure of 54.7%.

“We are looking at about another 2,000 sites.”

He also said that after the announcement the ministry will meet up with all service providers to discuss in detail equity issues.

On the DWN, he said one of the key aspects is that it will avoid problems of single network failure.

“If one network is not available, then there is a fallback on another network.”

This, he said will offer network diversity not only for the people, but also for the industrial sector which is one of the target groups that would use 5G technology.

“This decision is made by shifting the focus to elements of acceptance and innovation based on 5G technology comprehensively.

“This model also takes into account the sustainability of the telecommunications industry ecosystem in Malaysia thus ending elements of monopoly that are often associated with DNB.”

Fahmi said in line with the main principles outlined in Budget 2023 by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, this transition can manifest through inclusion and full participation of service providers without affecting existing 5G subscriptions, available at a reasonable rate for the people.

“We will cooperate with the Ministry of Finance (MOF) and DNB as well service providers to ensure the transition to a dual network model runs smoothly without affecting the interests of the people and the confidence of investors.” – May 3, 2023.
