PAS has dismissed reports that Shahidan Kassim may be its candidate for Semenyih in the Selangor elections due in the next few months.

Selangor PAS liaison secretary Roslan Shahir Mohd Shahir said there have been no discussions about fielding the Arau MP.

“However, we don’t know if there is a proposal at the central level to place him as a candidate in any assembly seat,” he was quoted as saying by Malay-language daily Utusan Malaysia today.

Roslan said Selangor PAS has chosen Selangor residents to stand on behalf of the party in the polls.

It was earlier reported Perikatan Nasional (PN) may count on Shahidan’s “aura” to attract voters after the former Umno minister helped the coalition win 17 out of 18 state seats in Perlis in the last general election.

Aside from Shahidan, the opposition party Bersatu is also said to have offered Khairy Jamaluddin the opportunity to stand for election.

Bersatu information chief Razali Idris was quoted as saying that the invitation to Khairy was made by party president Muhyiddin Yassin after the former minister’s expulsion from Umno in January.

Elections in Selangor, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah are expected to be held simultaneously in June, confirmed by PAS vice-president and Kelantan Deputy Menteri Besar Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah last week.

Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah are all led by PAS – a key component of Malaysia’s leading opposition coalition Perikatan Nasional (PN).

The other three states are led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition. – April 30, 2023.
