SARAWAK will engage researchers to conduct a comprehensive study on the extent of poverty in the state, said Premier Abang Johari Openg.
He said the situation requires more thorough investigation as poverty statistics in the state include those who own assets like land.
“In Sarawak, many people own assets but are still categorised as poor,” he told reporters after attending the Stakan open house today.
He was responding to a statement by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who said the unity government wants to eradicate hardcore poverty in the country, especially in Sabah, Sarawak, Kelantan, Terengganu and Kedah.
Abang Johari said he has discussed with Anwar the state government’s intention to gain more accurate data on poverty issues in Sarawak this year. – Bernama, April 29, 2023.
