KUALA Lumpur City Hall’s (DBKL) civil engineering and drainage department needs expert personnel to deal with erosion and landslide issues more effectively, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh said today.
She also asked DBKL to ensure erosion reports and complaints are taken seriously, because Segambut was affected by many landslide incidents.
“I have asked Mayor of Kuala Lumpur Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh to strengthen the department, which is in charge of landslides, because there are many reported incidents or cases… and there may not be enough human resources to help handle the incident,” she said after inspecting the site of the landslide in front of the Malaysia Anti-Corruption Academy on Persiaran Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin in Kuala Lumpur today.
The youth and sports minister said many hilly areas in the Segambut and Lembah Pantai districts, in which there are believed to have been many landslides.
“I understand there are more than 100 landslides reported in Segambut. I also understand that we need many more experts to help the slope unit in Kuala Lumpur,” she said, adding that forensic investigations are underway to determine the cause of yesterday’s incident.
Yesterday, the entire academy area had to be evacuated following a landslide at the main entrance at 1.30pm.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said 22 officers, 16 cleaners and seven occupants of the quarters, including the officers’ family members, had been moved to safety. – Bernama, April 26, 2023.
