JOHOR folk, especially those with health problems, are encouraged to continue using masks and maintain good hygiene to protect themselves against Covid-19 during the festive season, Johor Health and Unity Committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said.
According The Star, he said although the Covid-19 situation in Johor is under control, it is advisable for the people to continue taking precautionary measures when attending open houses.
“Those in the high-risk category should don masks, especially when attending open houses during Hari Raya where there may be large crowds,” Ling was quoted as saying.
“They should also maintain good personal hygiene and wash their hands regularly.”
He said in the past two weeks, 289 cases were reported in Johor, including 13 on Saturday.
He also said the take-up rate for the Covid-19 second booster vaccine dose in Johor has gone up to 3.2% from 1.9% previously.
“We encourage those in the high-risk group and those with chronic illnesses or health issues to take up the second booster,” he said.
“They normally have regular check-ups or get treatment at government health facilities. When there, we will encourage them to take it up.”
Earlier, Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the government was not introducing Covid-19 standard operating procedures for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
She said despite the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in recent weeks, there was no cause for panic.
“Wear a mask, especially when they display symptoms. Do seek medical treatment immediately and continue performing self-tests to monitor yourselves,” she added.
The World Health Organization, however, has advised Malaysians to self-test for Covid-19 before visiting their hometowns for Raya.
The health watchdog recommended bringing hand sanitiser and masks for the holiday to prevent the virus from spreading to the elderly. – April 22, 2023.
