Duo from Malaysian mission in Bangladesh nabbed over visa graft

TWO enforcement officers at the Malaysian High Commission in Dhaka, Bangladesh, have been remanded over suspicion of receiving bribes in connection with the issuance of visas for Bangladeshi tourists and workers arriving in Malaysia.

A source said the man and woman were ordered to return to Malaysia and were remanded for three days ending today.

It is not known if they have been released.

The source said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) had discovered “suspicious transactions” involving bank accounts belonging to the duo.

MACC froze more than 20 bank accounts and seized assets worth an estimated RM3.1 million, believed to belong to the two officers.

Among the assets are eight plots of land.

MACC chief Azam Baki confirmed the matter, and said more arrests may be made. – April 20, 2023.
