STAND-up comedian Siti Nuramira Abdullah pleaded guilty to alternative charges of uttering words with intention to hurt others’ religious feelings at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court this morning. 

She was slapped with an RM8,000 fine in default four months’ jail by judge N. Priscilla Hemamalini.

She was previously charged with insulting Islam under section 298A of the penal code for causing disharmony, disunity, or feelings of enmity, hatred or ill will, or prejudicing the maintenance of harmony or unity, on grounds of religion.

She had claimed trial to that charge, but this morning changed her plea to guilty of the alternative charge.

The 27-year old was charged in July last year over her performance at a comedy club.

Her lawyer Ramesh N. P. Chandran today said his client decided to change her plea after the prosecution offered an alternative charge under section 298 of the penal code for uttering words with intent to wound the religious feelings of others.

It carries a maximum one-year imprisonment, fine, or both upon conviction.

Siti Nuramira allegedly made degrading religious remarks and took off her baju kurung during her open mic routine.
