HUMAN Resources Minister V. Sivakumar was called in by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) this morning in connection with the arrests of two of his aides in the investigation into alleged corruption involving the recruitment of migrant workers.

It was reported that the minister turned up at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya at 10am to have his statement recorded.

Yesterday, the DAP lawmaker told reporters that MACC had yet to call him but if summoned, he would go willingly.

He also urged the public not to speculate on the matter as the arrests were part of the investigation process (into migrant workers’ recruitment practices).

An aide to the minister denied that Sivakumar was a suspect in the case.

“It is only a formality. The minister is not a suspect in this case. He is also not a witness,” the aide said briefly.

According to the aide, Sivakumar left the MACC building after having his statement taken.

The Malaysian Insight has tried to reach MACC chief Azam Baki for his comments.

A day before, MACC arrested a private secretary to Sivakumar, 24 hours after an aide to the minister was detained.

It is believed that the investigation is also focused on other individuals within the ministry as well as its agencies. – April 16, 2023.
