THE Malaysian Medical Association (MMA) has urged the public to be mindful of Covid-19 during Raya.
MMA president Dr Muruga Raj Rajathurai said the elderly and those with comorbidities must be protected.
“The virus has not changed in the way it spreads, and it can still cause severe symptoms or even long Covid (prolonged effects of Covid-19).
“Although most reported cases are mild, some do experience severe or prolonged symptoms, which may require hospitalisation and rehabilitation,” Dr Muruga Raj said in a statement today.
He said Malaysia may be in the post-pandemic stage with the virus well under control, but said we must still ensure high-risk groups are protected.
“Those with symptoms, regardless of age, should get themselves tested and isolated for the prescribed period if the test result is positive.
“It would be wise to not dismiss influenza-like symptoms as the common flu. Get tested for Covid-19,” he said.
Dr Muruga Raj also said masks must be worn around the elderly, those with comorbidities, and in crowded spaces with poor ventilation.
He also reminded people to adopt healthy habits.
“Observing a healthy diet, getting sufficient rest and exercising will help boost the immune system, which is the body’s natural defence against infections,” he said.
Ahead of the festive season, Malaysia has been seeing an increase in daily infections.
Over the past week, daily cases hovered around 700 daily, up from a standard range of 200 to 300 daily. – April 12, 2023.
