THE Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has reactivated Op Pagar Laut to curb cross-border crime during the Raya season.
MMEA deputy logistics director-general Saiful Lizan Ibrahim said the operation will be held from tomorrow until April 30.
“Criminals will probably think law enforcement during the festive season will be somewhat lax as most security personnel will be on leave to celebrate.
“They will try to take this opportunity to engage in criminal activities such as smuggling in illegal immigrants, contraband and controlled items; invading (maritime territories) and other crimes via sea,” he said after launching the operation today.
Saiful said MMEA will tighten control and optimise operations in crime hotspots, especially at the Thai and Indonesian borders.
He said 800 enforcement officers and 45 assets will be deployed to perform routine patrols in the country’s waters.
“MMEA is also ready to deploy relevant assets to perform search-and-rescue tasks if needed,” he said. – Bernama, April 8, 2023.
