PRIME Minister Anwar Ibrahim has asked for more time to respond to Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s letter of demand alleging the latter amassed wealth for himself and his family members.

Dr Mahathir sent Anwar a letter of demand on March 27, in which he gave the Tambun MP seven days to reply.

Lawyer Rafique Rashid, representing Dr Mahathir, said Anwar had asked until April 17 to respond to the letter.

“Our client had no objection to the request,” he said in a statement.

Dr Mahathir demanded Anwar retract the statement he made during his speech at the PKR Special National Congress recently.

In his speech, Anwar, among other things, accused Dr Mahathir of complaining about the plight of the Malays only after losing power.

“There were people in the past who held power for 22 years plus 22 months, and now complain the Malays have lost everything – property and shares.

“How can it not disappear when you took everything for your family and your children?

“Now when you have no power, you talk about the people’s plight,” said Anwar, who did not name Dr Mahathir.

Dr Mahathir insisted he was the person to whom Anwar was referring.

He said Anwar’s speech is “serious” as the latter is PKR president and prime minister.

“As prime minister, he has a responsibility. He can’t just make accusations without clear evidence,” Dr Mahathir said.

Dr Mahathir said Anwar’s statements were slanderous.

He demanded Anwar prove his statement or apologise. – April 4, 2023.
