FORMER Klang MP Charles Santiago has been reappointed as the National Water Service Commission (SPAN) chairman, a post he held for two years from 2018 to 2020.

In a statement, SPAN said he would return effective March 20.

SPAN is an independent regulatory body for water supply and sewerage services in the peninsula as well as Labuan.

During his first term as SPAN chairman, Santiago had, among others, launched an integrity and anti-corruption framework requiring water supply and sewerage companies to allocate at least 1% of their operational budget to combat graft and strengthen corporate governance.

Santiago previously said he had pushed for SPAN to conduct special performance audits on water utilities, on top of its usual audit activities, and three companies had been audited so far.

Prior to Santiago’s appointment, the unity government appointed Husam Musa as the chairman of Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad, a housing development government-linked company.

Former Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid was also rumoured to be appointed Tekun Nasional chairman, with Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan as his deputy. – March 27, 2023.
