320 in flood shelters in Perak, Johor

FORTY-SEVEN households comprising 179 people were evacuated to four relief centres (PPS) in Larut Matang and Selama because of floods in several villages last night.

A statement from the Perak Disaster Management Committee said 79 of the evacuees from Kampung Sungai Relong and Kampung Baru Batu 5 were housed in the PPS at SK Bukit Jana in Taiping.

“Forty-two people from Taman Mawar 2 and Kampung Jelapang Jaya in Bukit Gantang have been evacuated to the PPS at SK Simpang,” it said.

“Another PPS is open at the Sungai Baru Community Hall in Bukit Gantang to accommodate 12 people from Kampung Sungai Nyior and 46 more are at the PPS at Kampung Simpang Halt Community Hall.”

It also said the floods had not cut off road links in the affected areas and the weather today is reported to be fine.

IN JOHOR, the number of flood victims in Batu Pahat remained unchanged at 8am with 141 people from 37 families.

The state Disaster Management Committee said two PPS are still operating – Yong Peng Community Hall (79 people from 22 families) and SK Seri Medan (62 people from 15 families). 

“Among areas still affected by floods in Yong Peng are Kampung Parit Lapis Bangas, Kampung Jalan Lama, Taman Melur, Kampung Parit Amil, Taman Desa Suria and Taman Berlian, while in Sri Medan, the areas are Parit Yusof, Parit Haji Ahmad, Parit Warijo, Parit Bangas, Parit Sendayun dan Parit Seri Pasir,” the committee said in a statement today. 

Sungai Bekok is at a warning level of 18.93m, while Sungai Sembrong is at an alert level of 10.67m. – Bernama, March 26, 2023.
