Puspakom monopoly on vehicle inspections ends Aug 31 next year

Puspakom will no longer be the sole provider of vehicle inspection services for the Road Transport Department from September 1, 2024. – Puspakom handout, March 24, 2023

PUSPAKOM will no longer have a monopoly on providing vehicle inspection services once its concession ends on August 31 next year, Transport Minister Anthony Loke said.

He said the cabinet made the decision in a meeting on March 15.

He said removing the monopoly will allow other qualified service providers to carry out vehicle inspections, making the sector more competitive.

“Puspakom will no longer be the sole provider of vehicle inspection services for the Road Transport Department from September 1, 2024,” he told a press conference today.

“The concession for Puspakom will be renewed. However, inspection services will no longer be exclusive to Puspakom.”

Puspakom was awarded the 15-year concession in 2009.

Commercial vehicles are required to undergo a routine inspection at Puspakom every six months as part of the Road Transport Act 1987.

With 55 inspection centres and 28 inspection sites nationwide, it performs more than three million inspections annually.

Apart from the concession, it inspects hire purchase and imported vehicles as well as private vehicles, mainly cars that come in for voluntary inspection. – March 24, 2023.
