I use TikTok (TT) for two reasons. Firstly, to create content relating to my goal in spreading awareness and sharing stories related to mental and public health, epidemiology, and social issues. Secondly, to research how toxic this platform is for children and youth and then make videos to remind society to protect them.
When I scroll through videos on TT for about 15 minutes, I come across adults broadcasting their talents in the most insensitive and perverted ways, foul-mouthed people who use this platform to humiliate others.
It shocks me that these videos get the most views, likes, and shares. What’s worse is that these content creators are celebrated and invited by our media stations for interviews.
There is no way to stop our children and teenagers from using the internet and social media because their education and social activities involve them.
We need to educate our young ones on all these online hazards so that they do not find out things the wrong way and engage in destructive activities. With these inappropriate videos circulating on the web, they get intrigued and confused by people greedy for fame.
I urge the government and relevant ministries to give importance to what I say here. We need to help our young by curbing their social media addiction and creating a safe online environment for them. – March 23, 2023.
