UMNO has appointed its former youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki as the party’s new secretary-general, replacing Ahmad Maslan.  

The matter was announced by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi following the party’s first meeting of the new supreme council today.  

Asyraf, who was appointed the new Mara chairman earlier this month, did not contest in the recent party elections, paving the way for Merlimau assemblyman Muhamad Akmal Saleh to be elected the new Umno youth chief.  

Meanwhile, Zahid also announced that Pengerang lawmaker Azalina Othman Said has been appointed the party’s information chief.  

She takes over from Isham Jalil who has been elected to the Umno Supreme Council.  

“Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor will remain as the treasurer-general of Umno,” Zahid told a press conference at Umno headquarters today.

He added that former Wanita Umno chief Shahrizat Abdul Jalil has been appointed a supreme council member. 

Shahrizat, who lost the Wanita chief contest to incumbent Noraini Ahmad, will make her return to active politics with this appointment.  

Besides Shahrizat, Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed, Umno Youth secretary Hasmuni Hassan, former communications minister Jailani Johari, and Wanita Umno vice chief Norliza Abdul Rahim were appointed supreme council members. – March 22, 2023.
