OPEN toll payment will begin at five highways by September, Works Minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said.
He said through the open system, users can pay toll using credit or debit cards, in addition to Touch n’ Go (TnG) cards.
“The five highways are Sungai Besi Expressway, New Pantai Expressway, Ampang-Kuala Lumpur Elevated Highway, Guthrie Corridor Expressway and the Penang bridge,” Nanta said in a statement posted to Facebook today.
Nanta’s statement came after Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, in response to a question at the “Meet Anwar” event at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre yesterday, said the government will review TnG’s monopoly in the public transport and toll payment system.
Nanta said since earlier this year, he had ordered his ministry to plan and discuss with relevant parties as well as highway concessionaires to move towards implementing an open payment system.
“The implementation of this open payment system is one of the initiatives towards a transition to the multi-lane fast flow (MLFF) system.
“Through the MLFF, an open payment system will be in place at all tolled highways in Malaysia, and it will open up opportunities for more e-wallet providers to participate, ending the monopoly by TnG.
“With that, healthy competition will exist between industry players, which will provide more options for highway users to make toll payments,” he said.
Nanta said the proof of concept for the MLFF will be conducted before the end of October, and its locations will be finalised soon.
“The full implementation of the MLFF will be in stages, no later than the third quarter of 2024,” he said. – March 21, 2023.
