School canteens may open during Ramadan

SCHOOL canteens may operate during Ramadan, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said.

The first-term minister said educating non-Muslim students about the fasting month does not mean they should go hungry.

“Why should the canteens be closed? The non-Muslims will not be fasting. As such, they can go to the canteen and eat as usual.

“They are part of Malaysia, let them carry on as usual,” she told The Star.

Fadhlina added that schools must get approvals from their Parent-Teacher Associations if they want to close the canteen during the fasting month.

Ramadan is expected to start on Thursday. – March 21, 2023.
