Incumbent Umno division chiefs lose in party polls

FORMER Perlis menteri besar Azlan Man failed to defend his Kangar Umno division chief post – held since 2014 – in the party polls that ended yesterday.

The Perlis Umno liaison committee chairman lost to former Umno Supreme Council member Dr Fathul Bari Mat Jahya.

Fathul, who was also the Barisan Nasional candidate for the Kangar parliamentary constituency in the 15th general election, secured 368 votes to defeat Azlan, who only managed 179 votes.

The Umno divisional delegates meetings and elections as well as elections for Supreme Council positions for the 2023-2026 term that ended yesterday, involved 189 out of a total of 191 divisions nationwide.

At the time of filing this report the full results have yet to be announced.

IN MALACCA, the Tangga Batu division saw an upset when incumbent Mohamad Ali Mohamad, who is also Malacca Umno deputy chairman, narrowly lost by four votes to Rais Yasin.

Rais, who is also Paya Rumput assemblyman, won after getting 282 votes against Ali, who obtained 278.

Meanwhile, Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh, who yesterday won the Umno Youth chief post, was announced as the new Jasin Umno division head.

Facing a four-cornered fight, the Merlimau assemblyman also made history when he became the youngest leader at the age of 35 to lead the division after defeating incumbent Hasan Rahman. He secured 340 votes against the latter’s 194.

The other two candidates who lost were Serkam assemblyman and state Housing, Local Government and Environment Committee chairman Zaidi Attan (151 votes) and the division’s former treasurer Mohd Yusof Osman (21 votes). – Bernama, March 19, 2023.
