THE Proklamasi Orang Melayu gathering tomorrow, which will be attended by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has been cancelled.

The organisers said the event could not be held at the original venue, Hotel Impiana in Kuala Lumpur because of technical problems.

“We also couldn’t get the second location (Sime Darby Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur) because the management cancelled our booking last night at 9pm.

“The management did not give any reasons for the cancellation. We sincerely apologise to our guests for the two changes in location.”

The organisers will announce the status of the gathering soon.

They said the gathering is not a political event, rather a space to discuss the Malay community’s issues, including ones related to the economy and the cost of living.

As for Dr Mahathir’s attendance, the organisers said he will be joining in a personal capacity to witness the signing of the “proclamation”.

The opening speech will be given by former Utusan Malaysia assistant editor-in-chief Zaini Hassan, while academic and former senator Ibrahim Abu Shah will be moderating the event.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday warned he had ordered security forces to be on alert if certain quarters play up racial and religious sentiments.

Although he did not make specific references to any group, Anwar said those who harbour feelings of discontent will look to use these sentiments to provoke unrest. – March 18, 2023.
