FORMER prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who declared that Malay leaders who espouse multiracialism will not concentrate on solving Malay issues, is being divisive and racist, an interfaith group said.

The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) was referring to a viral poster promoting the Proklamasi Orang Melayu gathering this weekend where Dr Mahathir is the guest of honour.

In the poster it is claimed that Dr Mahathir had said the current unity government leadership is not addressing the issues of the Malays.

MCCBCHST president Jagir Singh said the current unity government’s policies have demonstrated inclusivity, while recognising the special position of Malays.

“It has done well for a fairly new government.

“Dr Mahathir led a multiracial government for 22 years with the strong backing of MCA and MIC but has now changed his stance for a Malay-only government.”

Meanwhile, organiser Secretariat Proklamasi Orang Melayu said this was not a political event, more to discuss Malay community issues, including the economy and the cost of living.

The group said it was responsible for circulating the posters on social media.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says any attempt to ratchet up racial tension will not be tolerated. – Prime Minister’s Office handout, March 18, 2023.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim yesterday warned he has ordered security forces to be on alert if certain quarters were to play up racial and religious sentiments.

Although he did not make any specific reference to any group, Anwar said those who harbour feelings of discontent will look to use these sentiments to provoke unrest.

“Any attempt made by anyone to pit one race against another, or to increase the racial and religious temperature in this country will not be permitted.

“I have ordered security forces to be on the alert because those who are desperate or feel challenged will use these sentiments, and the poor will be paid to cause chaos,” he said after chairing the cabinet meeting in Putrajaya.

The Proklamasi Orang Melayu event is to take place tomorrow at the Sime Darby Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

As for Dr Mahathir’s attendance, the organiser said he will be joining in his personal capacity to witness the signing ceremony of its “proclamation”.

The opening speech will be given by former Utusan assistant editor-in-chief Zaini Hassan, while academic and former senator Ibrahim Abu Shah will be moderating the event. – March 18, 2023.
