SARAWAK will upgrade its sports facilities and build a velodrome in Kuching for the 2024 Malaysia Games (Sukma).

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg said, as the host of the country’s biggest sporting event, the state is ready to provide all facilities required.

“(Construction of the) velodrome must be done as quickly as possible, the others (sports facilities and amenities) we already have but they need some upgrading.

“For us, the responsibility as the host is for national interest and we want to contribute but what is more important is that our athletes get exposure,” he said in Kuching today.

Yesterday, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh announced that Sarawak will host the games.

The games will see Sarawak becoming the host for the third time after the 1990 and 2016 editions.

Meanwhile, Abang Johari said the state government also wants the games to be felt throughout Sarawak and not just limited to the Kuching area only.

“We want to involve other areas in Sarawak, perhaps boxing can be held in Sri Aman, badminton in Sibu and we also want to involve Miri,” he added. – Bernama, March 17, 2023.
