THE government is drawing up guidelines of the use of the artificial intelligence-driven ChatGPT, Higher Education Minister Khaled Nordin said.

He said the ministry was looking at adopting ChatGPT and other AI technology as tools in the learning process.

“We are not regulating (ChatGPT), but we are working on providing guidelines on what to do and what not to do when adopting these tools,” he told FMT.

“It cannot be seen as a tool that is an end in itself. If we do this, then the learning process will be taken over by machines,” he said.

The minister said he had no knowledge of how widely ChatGPT was used in local institutions of higher education, adding that he would have to look it up.

The ministry had previously released a white paper to prepare the ministry for changes in teaching and learning.

In a Bernama report in January, Khalid said the white paper was aimed at managing current and future technological disruptions to teaching and learning and governance of higher education institutions. – March 17, 2023.
