DISCONTENT towards controversial local film “Mentega Terbang” has turned violent after its director and an actor received death threats this morning. Their cars were also damaged by unknown persons.

Director Khairi Anwar Jailani told The Malaysian Insight that red and black paint was poured on his car, while actor Arjun Thanaraju’s car was not only splashed with paint but also drenched in acid.

“What happened is just disheartening and it has turned physical. Some quarters are not happy with ‘Mentega Terbang’ and decided to act in a violent manner.

“At about 5am today, my car was splashed with red and black paint and the assailants left notes on my car, while Arjun’s car was doused with acid too.

“We informed the other cast members and they too are now worried about their own safety. All of us feel that someone is watching over us and we have to look over our shoulders.

“My immediate family members are worried, too, my wife especially. All of us are not comfortable,” said the 30-year-old.

Khairi said he had lodged a police report at the Kajang district police station, while Arjun had gone to Ampang Jaya district police station.

‘You and your family will die’

Khairi said the notes left on his car carried death threats and were terrifying.

He added that police had taken paint samples and looked for clues at his home that could reveal the identity of the culprits.

The notes said “Lu and family mesti mati” (you and family must die), “Islam pasti bangkit” (Islam will rise) and  “Mentega Terbang jangan cabar agama Islam” (Mentega Terbang don’t try to challenge Islam).

Khairi said following the incident, several friends have offered his family a place to stay.

“My friends are concerned about my and my family’s safety. They have offered me a place to stay until this matter is resolved.

“However, I haven’t made up my mind yet. Police have met me and took pictures and samples from the car. I hope this incident won’t prolong. This action against me, Arjun and other crew members is not what Islam should be,” he said.

Meanwhile, a police source in Kajang confirmed receiving the report but did not elaborate further.

In the past week, Bukit Aman had recorded statements from Khairi, Arjun and several other actors over the film.

Lawyer Zaid Malek, who is representing Khairi and Arjun, said the case is being investigated under section 298A of the penal code for causing disharmony, section 505(b) of the penal code for statements that lead to public alarm and distress, and section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 for improper use of network facilities.

“Mentega Terbang”, which discusses the similarities and differences of the major religions in Malaysia, has drawn criticism from the public as well as artistes. The movie has been available for viewing online since 2021.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said the streaming platform Viu had removed the movie on February 27.

MCMC said it was committed to working with Jakim to monitor any content that contradicted the teachings of Islam.

Meanwhile, Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil slammed the threats made against the filmmaker and actor.

He said Malaysians must “follow the law (and) don’t take matters into your own hands”. – March 16, 2023.
