THE government does not  plan to bring back UPSR and PT3 examinations as the education system has transitioned to school-based assessments.

Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the decision has been made to the examinations for Standard Six and Form Three students.

She said school-based assessments are the best approach to make learning more enjoyable for students while developing their potential.

“Therefore, the Education Ministry does not plan to bring back an examination-based system at this moment. Any decision to reintroduce the examinations depends on the results of the Malaysia Education Development Plan 2013-2025,” she said in a written parliamentary reply to Jamaludin Yahya (Pasir Salak-PN).

Fadhlina said school-based assessments were based on classroom, sports, co-curricular and psychometric results, adding that they also emphasised on morals and manners.

There have been calls from several quarters, including government backbenchers, for the reintroduction of UPSR.

Sim Tze Tzin (Bayan Baru-PM) said many parents have complained about their children’s lack of motivation to study.

The UPSR was abolished in 2021 and the PT3,  the following year. – March 16, 2023.
