DAP has chided opposition leader Hamzah Zainuddin for claiming that he has a full set of files on government leaders from the time he was home minister.

Lim Kit Siang and Lim Lip Eng both questioned if Hamzah could keep the files now that he is no longer in office.

Retired lawmaker Kit Siang said Hamzah could have broken the law in doing so.

“Is Hamzah going to turn himself in to the police as he has wilfully retained government files although he is no more home minister,” Kit Siang said in a statement today.

Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah recently revealed that he had built up substantial dossiers on party leaders when he was home minister. He said this while insisting that his party leader, Muhyiddin Yassin, was the subject of “selective prosecution”.

“I used to be the home minister, I think I’ve got a lot of files against them (government leaders) too. (It’s a matter of) whether I want to use them or not,” Hamzah told the English daily.

Lim today asked Hamzah why he had failed to act against Pakatan Harapan MPs if he had proof of wrongdoing.

“If the files which Hamzah has retained in his possession show that the Pakatan Harapan-Umno leaders were guilty of corruption and money-laundering, why was no action taken by the) Perikatan Nasional government?”

In a separate statement, Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said he has three questions to ask Hamzah.

“Firstly, can Hamzah keep the files which he claims he now possesses, especially after his term as the home minister? If the answer is yes, do other former home ministers such as Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Muhyiddin Yassin also keep such confidential records?” said Kip Eng.

“Secondly, if Hamzah was aware of incriminating evidence in the alleged files, why didn’t he pursue the cases against the culprits when he was home minister? Why does he only now threaten to use the information against the current government? Is Hamzah trying to use the files as his bargaining chip in negotiations with the government in order to obtain something he wants?

“Thirdly, was Hamzah not duty-bound to uphold the course of justice by reporting the crimes to the authorities? If the files are under the Official Secrets Act, would Hamzah not have committed a crime punishable under the act by holding on to the files?”

He urged the authorities to probe Hamzah for possible covering up of crimes. – March 13, 2023.
