THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has stressed that the investigation against several individuals regarding the Jana Wibawa programme is an initiative based on information and evidence obtained by the anti-graft body itself.

In a statement, MACC said that the investigation papers that have been completed were referred to the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) for consideration.

“The investigation process is free from interference by any party.

“Therefore, the accusations that the MACC’s investigation was politically motivated was not true and has tarnished the reputation of this commission,” it said.

Earlier today, former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin was charged with six counts of abuse of power and money laundering charges.

He is alleged to have received bribes amounting to RM232.5 million for his party Bersatu.

He claimed trial and is out on a RM2 million bail.

He is expected to face a fresh charge at the Shah Alam High Court on Monday.

Muhyiddin told the press that the decision to charge him with corruption was made by the most powerful party in the national administration prior to his arrest yesterday.

He said the charges were decided upon even before the investigation was completed.

“They used enforcement agencies as tools to achieve their political goals.

“Obviously, the prosecution was a form of planned political predation. It was an organised political persecution,” Muhyiddin said after proceedings at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today. – March 10, 2023.
