THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) would not be able to arrest anyone in relation to graft if every investigation is deemed “politically motivated” by critics, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

He was responding after Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin was summoned to the anti-graft agency this morning, with its chief Azam Baki now confirming that the former prime minister will be charged tomorrow.

Anwar denied that the probe against Muhyiddin was politically motivated.

“To claim every case is politically motivated, does it mean (the MACC) can’t make arrests?

“And that all huge corruption cases should not be pursued?” he asked reporters today.

The MACC is investigating allegations that chosen contractors allegedly deposited RM300 million in Perikatan Nasional lynchpin party Bersatu’s account before the last general election.

Muhyiddin has denied this, adding that he is a victim of political slander by those intending to smear his reputation. He has also threatened to take legal action against his accusers.

Last week, two Bersatu leaders faced charges for graft.

Former Bersatu information chief and Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad were alleged to have collected funds from the awarding of projects in connection with the Jana Wibawa scheme during Muhyiddin’s tenure as the eighth prime minister.

Anwar also denied interfering in the work of any agencies, claiming that even he was unsure about the development of the case.

“The MACC only informs the prime minister when it plans to call in anyone with political implications,” he said.

He added that regardless of which persons are being investigated, all MACC cases should be viewed on a case-by-case basis.

“I want to stress here that all who want this country to be clean and free of corruption must look at each case individually, whether there is political prosecution or is based on facts.

“What I have said all this while with regard to Jana Wibawa and flood mitigation, it is based on documents from the Finance Ministry, not the MACC or the Attorney-General’s Chambers,” he added. – March 9, 2023. – March 9, 2023.
