BERSATU is planning to turn its general assembly scheduled for this weekend into a mass gathering in support of its president Muhyiddin Yassin, who is facing arrest and charges, party sources said.

A source said discussions had been held last night after news broke out about Muhyiddin’s imminent arrest.

He faces Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) investigators this morning, after which he is expected to face charges either later today or tomorrow.

“The party has decided to come out strong to support our president. With the general assembly this weekend, we will take the opportunity to turn it into a place to stand with Muhyiddin,” said a source.

PAS leaders are also expected to join in the gathering.

The party has also organised a prayer session, followed by a ceramah later tonight at Taman Melewar in Gombak, Selangor.

More such sessions are expected to be held in coming days, said the source.

Meanwhile, Bersatu information chief Razali Idris told reporters outside MACC headquarters in Putrajaya this morning that the agenda for the general assembly may change with the recent development.

“Even if the worst happens, the party will go ahead with the general assembly.

“We will see what happens next. Today he (Muhyiddin) has been summoned by the MACC and we need to see what their actions are against him.

“The general assembly will go on but there might be changes to the agenda,” Razali said.

Party leaders and supporters including Mohd Azmin Ali, Indera Mahkota MP Saifuddin Abdullah, were seen outside the MACC headquarters.

MACC is currently investigating allegations that chosen contractors allegedly deposited RM300 million in Perikatan Nasional lynchpin party Bersatu’s account before the last general election.

Muhyiddin has denied this, adding that he is a victim of political slander by those intending to smear his reputation. He has also threatened to sue his accusers.

Prior to this two Bersatu leaders had been charged with graft.

Former Bersatu information chief and Tasek Gelugor MP Wan Saiful Wan Jan and Segambut Bersatu deputy chief Adam Radlan Adam Muhammad were charged with corruption last week.

They are alleged to have collected funds from the awarding of projects during Muhyiddin’s tenure as the eighth prime minister. – March 9, 2023.
