AMAZON Web Services (AWS), a subsidiary of US e-commerce giant Amazon, committed to investing RM25 billion in Malaysia following the formation of the unity government, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

“It is true that negotiations started in 2019 and continued under the next two governments and prime ministers.

“But Amazon did delay the final decision which was only made after the establishment of the unity government,” he told the Dewan Rakyat during question time today.

Anwar was responding to a question from Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (Kubang Pasu-PN), who said the American company, which provides on-demand cloud computing platforms, had commenced negotiations for investment in Malaysia in 2019 when Dr Mahathir Mohamad was prime minister.

On March 2, it was reported that AWS planned to invest RM25.5 billion in a new regional office in Malaysia.

Anwar, who is also the finance minister, said a stable political administration with clear policies and directives, was attracting huge investments to Malaysia.

“AWS was courted by most of the Asean countries but chose Malaysia because of increasing confidence, serving as a catalyst for the entry of new investors from the West and East. – March 7, 2023.
