SEVERAL banks have agreed to grant a six-month loan moratorium for flood victims in Johor as a relief measure during this challenging time, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said.

Anwar said as of today, Maybank, CIMB and Agrobank have agreed to grant a special loan moratorium to borrowers.

“There was a proposal from the Johor government to give a moratorium to borrowers so they can delay payment due to their desperate circumstances.

“So far, Maybank and CIMB have agreed to give a six-month moratorium,” the Tambun lawmaker told the Dewan Rakyat during the minister’s question and answer session today.

Anwar said Putrajaya is in talks with other banks to extend the same relief to Johor flood victims.

Initially, Anwar only mentioned that Maybank and CIMB had agreed to give a moratorium but Agriculture and Food Security Minister Mohamad Sabu, seated next to the prime minister, said Agrobank has also granted the financial relief.

On other relief measures, Anwar also said he had instructed the federal government to channel RM50 million as immediate flood assistance to Johor.

“Just like Terengganu and Kelantan, we have approved RM50 million for Johor and we channel it as usual, directly to the victims,” he said.

Anwar said RM1,000 cash aid will be given to every household affected by floods while families who lost a loved one will be given RM10,000.

Recently, former prime minister and Pagoh lawmaker Muhyiddin Yassin called for the immediate flood aid of RM50 million to Johor to be increased to RM100 million. – March 7, 2023.
