THE opposition has every right to topple the current government, not just through elections but via parliament, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said.

He said no one can stop the opposition from doing so and the act of overthrowing a government is done in many countries.

Hadi told reporters in parliament that the opposition was working on retaking Putrajaya “not only through elections but even through parliament”, adding that this was a normal practice in a democratic country.

“This is normal in politics. Votes of no confidence, gathering statutory declarations or disgruntled government supporters. It’s normal. And we can see signs of discontent among the component (parties) of this (unity) government,” he told reporters in parliament today.

Asked to comment on Bersatu leaders wanting to stay in the opposition, the Marang MP said their stand can change quickly.

“The dynamics in politics can change anything,” he said.

Hadi also defended his prediction that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government would collapse soon.

“That (predicting Anwar’s downfall) is a political statement. And usually in politics (there are) votes of no confidence, obtaining SDs (statutory declarations). Supporters of the government would turn away,” Hadi said.

Last week, he said the unity government cobbled together by Anwar would collapse.

Hadi said when it does happen, no one, particularly the unity government, could point fingers at the opposition.

Anwar shot back, saying the PAS veteran could keep on dreaming.

“It’s fine, it’s his right to plan and dream (of the government collapsing),” Anwar told reporters last Friday. – March 6, 2023.
