Reconsider costly aircraft purchase for maritime patrol

AT a crucial maritime crossroads, Malaysia’s protection of its waters is vital, particularly in the Strait of Malacca, where there is substantial naval traffic passes to and from China, Korea, and Japan. The recent decision of the government to acquire a plane for its Maritime Patrol Aircraft (MPA) programme is a step towards strengthening its weak air patrol resources.

The current air patrol resources of our country include only one old C-130H and three King Air 200s, which are inadequate to provide complete coverage of the country’s vast maritime territory.

However, concerns have been raised about the choice of aircraft, particularly its age limitations, against newer options in the market.

Previously, the government under Barisan Nasional’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob accepted Leonardo’s offer for the ATR 72MP twin-turboprop aircraft. The new Pakatan Harapan-BN unity government, led by Anwar Ibrahim, has stated its intention to review all previous procurement processes to ensure transparency and value for money.

While cost is a factor, investing in equipment that meets operational needs and provides the best value for money is crucial. Hence, the PH-BN government must reconsider purchasing the ATR 72MP and explore other affordable and reliable options, such as the P-8 Poseidon or the Q400 MPA.

The air force should be consulted to determine their requirements and provide suggestions for suitable aircraft. Local experts should also be consulted to ensure the country’s sovereignty is not compromised.

The government must invest in equipment to meet our country’s evolving security needs. Purchasing an aircraft is an essential step toward improving Malaysia’s air patrol capabilities, but the government must ensure that it invests in the best available option. A new procurement process must guarantee transparency, accountability, and the best possible outcome for Malaysia’s security.

In conclusion, the country’s maritime security is essential, and the current government must make the best choice in selecting an aircraft for air patrol. The ATR 72MP aircraft may not be the best option, and other affordable and dependable options must be considered to ensure the safety and security of our waters.

The new procurement process must be transparent, and local experts and the air force must be consulted to ensure that the government’s decision meets Malaysia’s operational needs and sovereignty. – March 4, 2023.
