FIVE states recorded 36,191 evacuees at temporary relief centres (TRCs) today due to floods over the past few days.
IN JOHOR, there has been no improvement to the situation although its number of evacuees dropped to 32,870 as at 4pm compared with 33,149 at 8am today.
The state Disaster Management Committee (DMC) said two new TRCs were opened, for a total of 219 in Johor’s 10 districts.
It said Segamat is still the worst-hit district with 12,258 people from 3,511 families evacuated to 78 TRCs.
This is followed by Kluang (5,251 victims from 1,528 families in 39 centres); Batu Pahat (4,491 victims from 1,215 families in 25 centres); Kota Tinggi (3,431 from 923 families in 20 centres); Muar (2,853 from 832 families in 18 centres); and Tangkak (2,186 from 598 families in 20 centres).
Also affected are Johor Bahru (1,218 victims from 357 families in six centres); Mersing (768 from 228 families in eight centres); Pontian (361 from 90 families in four centres); and Kulai (53 from six families in one centre).
IN PAHANG, the Social Welfare Department’s Info Bencana portal reported there were 2,183 evacuees at 23 TRCs compared with 2,031 victims in 30 centres this morning, with Rompin still the worst hit with 1,821 evacuees, followed by Maran (137 victims), Pekan (106), Temerloh (90) and Bera (29).
The state Flood Management Committee secretariat said two centres in Raub and Jerantut were closed this morning.
IN MALACCA, the number of flood victims rose to 162 from 40 families at 2pm compared to 144 from 35 families at 8am.
The state DMC secretariat said the number of evacuees in Alor Gajah remained at 12 people from six families, who are all still housed at Balai Raya Bukit Tambun.
“In Jasin, the number of victims rose to 150 from 34 families compared with 132 from 29 families this morning. All the evacuees in Jasin are housed at three centres, namely, SK Chohong, SK Seri Mendapat and SK Parit Penghulu,” it said in a statement.
In Jasin, nine areas were inundated – Kampung Sungai Dua Asahan, Kampung Pondok Batang, Kampung Bukit Asahan, Kampung Chohong, Sempang Bekoh, Kampung Tersusun Seri Mendapat, Kampung Janda Berhias, Kampung Parit Penghulu and Kampung Tasik.
IN NEGRI SEMBILAN, the Social Welfare Department Info Bencana portal reported a slight dip in the number of victims, with 938 from 272 families still housed in nine centres as at 1.30pm compared with 1,061 from 301 families this morning.
This involves Tampin and Jempol, with the latter recording the highest number of evacuees at 796.
IN SARAWAK, the number of victims in the Engkilili and Julau areas dropped to 38 from 17 families this evening compared with 43 evacuees from 18 families this morning.
According to the state DMC secretariat, two centres are still in operation, with 24 victims from 12 families housed at the Johnical Rayong Hall in Engkilili and 14 evacuees from five families placed at the Julau Sports Complex. – Bernama, March 3, 2023.
