Number of flood evacuees tops 36,000

AUTHORITIES across five states reported more than 36,000 people seeking shelter from rising flood waters this morning.

In JOHOR, the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said flooding had worsened with the number of evacuees rising to 33,149 by 8am today, compared to 28,486 at 8pm yesterday.

The SDMC said 19 more relief centres had been opened, bringing the total to 217 in all 10 districts.

Segamat is the worst affected district with 12,186 people evacuated to 77 centres, followed by Kluang with 5,174 people at 38 centres and Batu Pahat with 4,340 people at 24 centres.

Also affected is Kota Tinggi with 3,689 people at 19 centres; Muar (2,829 people at 18 centres); Tangkak (1,999 people at 19 centres); Johor Baru (1,216 people at six centres; Mersing (722 people at eight centres); Kulai (630 people at three centres); and Pontian (364 people at five centres). – Bernama, March 3, 2023.
